Science-fiction, fantasy and the spaces in between
With an ever-expanding readership, and fascinating new subgenres emerging all the time, we are entering a golden age for genre fiction. Join us for a night exploring the meaning and boundaries of science-fiction and fantasy today.

This panel discussion features bestselling science-fiction writer Peter F. Hamilton (The Commonwealth Saga and The Void Trilogy), million-selling fantasy novelist Stan Nicholls (Orcs: First Blood and Orcs: Bad Blood), young adult author Janet Edwards (Earth Girl) and author and publisher Mez Packer (The Game Is Altered) who is one of two writers creating the narrative for the Festival’s Reliable Witness project.

Birmingham author David Moody wrote the Hater and Autumn books, the latter of which he published online. The book became a sensation, eventually being downloaded by half a million readers and spawning a series of sequels and a 2009 movie starring Dexter Fletcher and David Carradine, while film rights to the Hater series have been snapped up by director Guillermo del Toro.

Conrad Williams is the author of seven novels, four novellas and a collection of short stories. He has won two major prizes for his novels – one was the winner of the August Derleth award for Best Novel (British Fantasy Awards 2010), while The Unblemished won the International Horror Guild Award for Best Novel in 2007, beating the shortlisted Stephen King on both occasions.

Award winning author Sam Stone’s first novel won the Silver Award for Best Horror Novel in ForeWord Magazine’s book of the year awards in 2007. In September 2008, the novel was re-edited and republished by The House of Murky Depths as Killing Kiss. The sequels, Futile Flame and Demon Dance, went on to become finalists in the same awards, and both novels were later shortlisted for The British Fantasy Society Awards.
