Mega-City One, 2099. This vast urban nightmare has sprung up from the post-apocalyptic ashes of North America’s east coast. Each of the 400 million citizens based there is a potential criminal and only the Judges can prevent total anarchy. These future lawmen are judge, jury, and executioner. Toughest of them all is Judge Dredd – he is the Law! By the end of 1977 Brian Bolland was regularly handling art chores for John Wagner’s scripts on Judge Dredd. All told, he illustrated 19 stories. Judge Dredd: The Complete Brian Bolland collects these stories in oversized format, featuring meticulous modern coloring by Charlie Kirchoff. Brian Bolland has earned a reputation as one of the best cover artists in the industry, and his elegantly composed and beautifully rendered pieces have graced a host of titles, including ANIMAL MAN, BATMAN, THE FLASH, THE INVISIBLES, WONDER WOMAN and many more. |

Thought Bubble Sequential Arts Festival 11th – 18th November 2012 The Thought Bubble Festival is the UK’s largest event of its kind – an annual celebration of sequential art in all its forms, including everything from superhero comics to independent and small-press artists and writers. Thought Bubble formed in 2007 as a non-profit-making organisation dedicated to promoting comics, graphic novels, and animation as an important national and international cultural art-form. Now in its 6th year, the festival has been extended over seven days with a jam-packed programme of events at a variety of venues across the city. Our aim is to cater to both long-time comic book fans and those who have never picked up a graphic novel before! The sixth Thought Bubble will take place from the 11th – 18th November 2012 at venues around Leeds and Bradford, with a centre-piece two day convention on 17th – 18th November at Saviles and Royal Armouries Halls – Leeds’ largest conference venues. Kevin Eastman is an American comic book artist and writer, best known as the creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. TMNT started as a parody of 1980s comic books and exploded into a globally popular range of toys, cartoon series, video games, two feature films [with a third planned for 2014!], and masses of other merchandise. The Heroes In A Half Shell return to TV this month with a new animated series on Nickleodeon. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ IDW relaunch in an oversized, hardcover edition that includes extras that were not included in the comics or the previously released paperback edition. |

Starting to Write Comics and Graphic Novels – course tutors: Selina Lock and Jay Eales(0) If a picture paints a thousand words, then the hybrid comics medium has the best of both worlds. Call them graphic novels, funny-books, bande dessinee or manga, we’re talking about comics.Through group discussion, we will examine the ways the medium can be used to tell stories in different genres, and some of the tricks of the trade. Students will learn the basics of comic script writing through a series of exercises, and receive feedback on their own scripts. Other topics include collatborating with artists, submitting to publishers, and alternative publishing options.
