The July meeting of the Birmingham Science Fiction Group is proud to host publisher Jo Fletcher. Jo has been one of the most popular guests at the BSFG in times past when she was a senior editor for Gollancz’s lines of Science Fiction and Fantasy. Since her last visit Jo has set up her own independent publisher business and we expect Jo to give another fascinating talk on this new subject. Jo Fletcher Books specialises in publishing a wide range of fantastic fiction and publishes a variety of authors, including Charlaine Harris, creator of the Sookie Stackhouse books. So why not come and meet her at our meeting? Jo is sure to give a fascinating talk and insight into editing and publishing fantastic fiction. The meeting is on 13 July at the Briar Rose Hotel on Bennett’s Hill, Birmingham; this venue is just 5 minutes walk from New Street Station and handy for all bus routes. The meeting opens its doors at 7:30 pm. The group itself has many members of all ages, and between them the membership has an enormous wealth of knowledge of literary SF, as well as films, television, etc. If you want to know about a particular author or book, the BSFG is unlikely not to be able to help you! Just let us know you are a first timer when you turn up and any member will be happy to introduce you to the committee and make you feel as welcome as we can… If you live anywhere in or around the West Midlands, the BSFG is the group for you! BFS London Open Night(0) The first BFS London Open Night for 2012 has been booked for 2 March 2012 at The Mug House – just under London Bridge, opposite the London Dungeon. Doors officially open Friday night from 6pm onwards. Festivities planned so far include a book launch for author/editor Allen Ashley‘s new anthology Where Are We Going from Eibonvale Press. Also, Quercus Books will be hosting a charity auction – Nicola Budd, Editorial Assitant at Quercus Books, explains: “As part of the BFS open night on 2nd March 2012, we will be hosting a silent auction to raise money for the charity Have A Heart, supporting children’s hospices in the UK. The auction, in conjunction with Jo Fletcher Books, will include signed first editions from across the SF, Fantasy and Horror genres, as well as some signed original artworks. All the money contributed will be going to help build a better future for children who are vulnerable, face adversity or live with a disability or illness, so prepare to dig deep!
