The 2010 awards now being over, it's time for the 2011 awards to begin: http://tinyurl.com/bfa-recs-2011. It's like a never-ending love parade...

The form is a little different this year. You just make one recommendation at a time. Slightly more time-consuming for you, but infinitely easier for me, for dull reasons pertaining to spreadsheets, and mail merges, and all that kind of stuff. It'll mean I can check eligibility more easily as we go along, rather than waiting to the end, for example.

14 February 2011 is the final date for making recommendations.

Can I ask you a couple of questions about this, Stephen? First, are we OK to nominate more than one book, etc, in each category? Secondly, when it comes to the Best Newcomer Award, is this just for new writers, or would new publishers be included? Thanks!

You can make unlimited recommendations in each category, resubmitting the form as many times as necessary.

Only fiction writers for best newcomer, I'm afraid.

Hello,

Can I ask another question about the New Writer award? I looked it up:

"The award is for a new fiction writer who has produced previously unpublished work in the eligible year (must first be published in any print format (book, magazine, small press) in any part of the world in the English language during the relevant year."

How do you define 'new fiction writer' is it for someone with no previous publications (at any level)?

thanks,

debs

There's no hard and fast rule about that. The panel will consider eligible works nominated by members (and provided by publishers), but may decide against giving the award to a writer they didn't feel was "new" enough.

As mentioned elsewhere, I'm in the process of stepping down from my position as awards administrator, but the show must go on!

BFS members, and attendees of FantasyCon 2010 and 2011, you have until February 14 to make your recommendations:

When do the recommendations become a long list for voting?  I'm actually going to FantasyCon this year and I'm excited about voting...

(I think I get to vote, it depends if I remember the rules right!  I didn't book in time to recommend anything, unfortunately, which is a shame because there was A LOT of good stuff last year.)

It's normally round about the time of the March mailing.

Yes, you'll get to vote, having registered for FantasyCon. If there's something you wanted to recommend, but it doesn't appear on the longlist, you can still vote for it - write-in votes are allowed at this stage.

(Someone new has taken over the running of the awards, so I'm just answering as a regular member.)

Thank you, that's not only helpful but good news, too.  I'll start digging through titles...

Isn't it time the Long List for the BFA's was published?

Or have I missed noticing it?

It's very nearly ready ... just in the final stages of checking the content.
