Dear All

Happy New Year.

Just to let you know that I've just posted a review of Murky Depths 14 on my web site at http://exaggeratedpress.weebly.com/index.html

If you would like me to review any books let me know. I try to purchase books I review because I understand how expensive the whole business is and how difficult it is to sell books!

Regards

Good review. Murky Depths is an interesting magazine from the issues I've seen, but just too expensive; it's competing with magazines dedicated to either comics or fiction that are almost half the price. For the price of Murky Depths, I get Black Static and Clint.

It's worth popping your details on this thread, by the way - I get a steady stream of books for review from people who find my contact details there.

I was disappointed when I read this comment last year. Everyone has an opinion but when it comes from a fellow publisher you wonder what their agenda is. Although it was interesting to have comparisons made with the two mentioned publications these comparisons were totally flawed. I'd loved to have been able to sell Murky Depths cheaper but our production values were high and print runs small in contrast to that of Black Static and Clint. It was foolish to claim Murky Depths was competing against those publications. Murky Depths was perfect bound not saddle stitched - always looking good on bookshelves (while they survive) - it was American comic book size rather than A4 and, most importantly, it mixed prose and comics. It would have made more academic sense to compare Murky Depths with other publications that mixed prose and comics.

To put some figures on it, by buying Black Static and Clint rather than Murky Depths (using the closest issues of each to hand) I got 72 pages of comics instead of 34, and 90 pages of of fiction, columns etc rather than 48. And although much of what I've read of Murky Depths was good, the fiction, comics and columns in Black Static and Clint are frequently outstanding.

You might not have seen Murky Depths as competing directly with those publications, but when it came to getting my money it was. Sorry if my comments hurt your feelings, and I understand why Murky Depths was unable to compete on price or content, but my only agenda was to say what I thought.
