I think they must be talking in a foreign language, Peter - I can't understand a word of it!

I don't seem to have got on the list to receive them as yet, not that you have our amazon address in any case. Should I hang on until you've had time to tweak them, or are the ones that are done as done as they're going to get?
Hi David, If you want a Kindle edition of the current journal then email secretary@britishfantasysociety.org with your Kindle address and I'll send it out to you. It'll be the next one that (hopefully) will be a little more advanced!

run the pdf master through a quick conversion tool. Edit and add TOC and chapter links using software of choice (sigil for example). That creates a bit more whiz bang epub that can then be converted to kindle using Amazon's own conversion tool. Mind you, I've been doing them for a couple of years so it's easy to make it sound simple The new Kindle and ePub versions are going to be especially designed for ebooks rather than just converting it from a PDF. Incidentally we're also looking into having a PDF version for people with iPads / tablets.

After I got the BFS Journal last night, I used Calibre to convert it to epub, used Sigil to add headings, contents, cover and metadata, then used Calibre to convert it back to mobi and email it to the Kindle. Took about ten or fifteen minutes.
Well hopefully you won't have to worry about doing it yourself soon...

You don't have to start from scratch or from indesign/quark. A pdf conversion is a perfectly valid starting point but only a starting point. (and I create epubs from scratch)

I'm not really following you on this, Phil - why would you start from a pdf, if you have the Quark or InDesign files - what's the benefit? The only reason I can think of for using a pdf would be if you can't get hold of the typeset files, or don't have the software to open them.

OK, I'm confused here. I've emailed the secretary twice about getting the kindle copies, but received no reply. I was just about to renew our membership & saw the space for entering my kindle email, so I decided I would do that, BUT... I read the following... "The option ‘Kindle email address’ is something of an experiment – as well as sending the BFS Journal to members as a book edition, if we have your Kindle email address, then we will additionally send it to your Kindle device via Amazon’s free conversion and formatting service. We’ll trial this during 2011 and see how it goes. Please, if adding the Kindle email, use the @free.kindle.com version or you will be charged by Amazon for the download. Also ensure that bfs.secretary@gmail.com is added to your Kindle account as an address from which content can be sent. Membership." I can find nothing on amazon about this free version of the kindle address &, as far as I can see, they only charge if you enable transfer via whispernet, which I can't do anyway, as I don't have the 3G version of the kindle. I'm going to hold off until someone explains this to me.

Hi there, This is from the Amazon site: Free Transfer of Personal Documents If you would like to transfer your personal documents to your Kindle for free, you can send attachments to "name"@free.kindle.com to be converted and e-mailed to your computer at the e-mail address associated with your Amazon.co.uk account log-in. You can then transfer the document to your Kindle using your USB connection. For example, if your Kindle e-mail address is Jay@Kindle.com, send your attachments to Jay@free.kindle.com. Cheers, Cav

As far as I can see if you have docs sent direct to your kindle address, they don't charge. Maybe they changed it?

Must admit, I thought the same!
The journal is currently at the printers, but I'm hoping to have the digital versions ready for mid-next week.

I'm pretty certain amazon no longer charge for documents sent to your standard kindle e-mail, but I've emailed them for confirmation. I certainly have no charges for the documents I've sent to my kindle so far.

Just received the following reply from amazon (that was quick!)
Fees for the transfer of personal documents to your Kindle wirelessly using Whispernet are based on the size of the file submitted, your home country, and your current location.
Fees will only be charged for documents that are successfully received wirelessly to your Kindle via Whispernet. Wi-Fi delivery of personal documents is free.
So, as long as we aren't receiving them via Whispernet, which I am not, there's no problem using the @kindle.com address.
I have no idea if @free.kindle.com still works for those who actually use Whispernet.

Just renewed membership for Jilly & I, & submitted our kindle email, so we should get the new Journal in both formats. Now, is there any chance I can get the recent back issues in electronic format too?
