Hiya Jen,
Just wanted a quick clarification 'cos it's not clear on the website -- when does the infamous Awards and Disco take place, is it Sunday night or Saturday? -- It'll be helpful in deciding whether or not it's worth staying at the hotel for Sunday night as well...

From what I can tell of the programme posted at http://www.fantasycon2012.org/programme.htm - looks like they're doing what they did this year and having the disco Saturday night and the awards/banquet Sunday lunchtime onwards... (So I'm going to miss the awards again next year but I might make the disco if I'm not too knackered from working the Reg desk all day... )

Well if it's any help I just found out that the Sunday night (Sept 30th) is bookable for just £45 at the moment -- alas, apparently there's a LibDem conference going on prior to FantasyCon, and anyone wanting to book in for the Wednesday night (26th Sept) will be charged over £200... ouch...
Other than the above, thank you... at least I know there's a reasonable chance I can make both the Saturday evening and the Sunday afternoon...

Can't help thinking part of the reason the awards went so well on Saturday nights was because everyone was sozzled..!
Anyway, just bought my ticket and will be there this year, all on my tod. I'll be the quiet little fellow shuffling in and out of events looking at my feet.

The hotel is filling up really quickly - the convention's already onto its second allocation of rooms - so time to book now if you haven't. Just done mine.

Just wondering- is anyone driving down from the Manchester or Liverpool area who'd have room for two passengers? (Contributions towards petrol/parking costs available.) It'd be nice to be able to stay for the Awards this year...

.Wow, what can I say. I really enjoyed it. It was brilliant meeting Brent Weeks and Joe Abercrombie. My son is very much a Brent Week's fan whereas I like both authors. Mind you he hasn't read Joe's books yet! Both are very gritty writers. But, what nice people. We heard both giving readings in a very pleasant and personal environment. They both gave stunning performances, but Brent had a very brilliant twist to his. It was all about Spoilers so I can't say anything here in respect to the great man, but it was awesome and had his fans groaning in a mixture of disbelief and frustration.
The event itself was also brilliant. Very few fans though and rather a lot of authors and publishers. There were book signings by lots of different publishing houses. Reading by authors, freebies etc. Great mixture of characters. I met some really nice and genuine folk. Chris of Pendragon Press, Terry from Exagerated press.
The venue is also interesting, Brighton. However, it's a tad expensive. Brighton is always lively and probably would have been better if we'd know our way around better. The pubs, hotel and especially parking were all very expensive and probably explained the absence of fans

I enjoyed it too, David, and you and son, Andrew, will sell a lot more at other similar cons, I'm sure. The dealers' room being in the basement was far quieter than last year I'm sad to say, but I sold a handful of my ARIA book even though my main point of going to FCon is more social than business.

I thought it was a great con. Seeing Joe Lansdale was a joy (that man has an amazing accent!).
Saturday was the high point with the panels with Mark Gatiss and Muriel Grey, who both seemed to really enjoy themselves. I hope that means they'll both be thinking about being guest again in the future?
The only slight mare on the event (if you were staying at the RA) were the groups of student roaming the corridors into the small hours every night shouting at each other...

I had two dodgy phone calls to my room from those very students. Fortunately, I was still up watching the Ryder Cup on TV. I thought that there might be an issue with them congregating around the lift on the first floor but I was far enough away for it not to bother me. Still, not a patch on the folk who used to haunt Walsall...
