If you were talking about people who have previously struggled with books, I reckon you couldn't go wrong with The Hobbit, Hitchhiker's or The Rats - good, fairly easy to read books from which there are lots of pathways into their respective genres.

I have to say, I can't top those three when it comes to "gateway books" for our particular genres of choice. Nice thinking.
