But going back to more sensible things ...

The British Fantasy Society is delighted to announce that the 2012 British Fantasy Awards will be decided by a jury of five volunteers, a first in BFS history. The jury consists of:

James Barclay: James is the author of the two Raven trilogies: "Chronicles of The Raven" and "Legends of The Raven", and the epic fantasy duology, "The Ascendants of Estorea". He has written two novellas, "Light Stealer" and "Vault of Deeds", and his latest book "Elves: Once Walked With Gods" is out now.

Hal Duncan: Hal's debut "Vellum" was published in 2005, garnering nominations for the Crawford, Locus, BFS and World Fantasy Award, and winning the Gaylactic Spectrum, Kurd Lasswitz and Tähtivaeltaja. He's since published the sequel "Ink", the novella "Escape from Hell!", various short stories, and a poetry collection.

Maura McHugh: Maura is a writer, freelance web designer and IT consultant. She's currently writing two comic book series ("Rķisín Dubh" and "Jennifer Wilde") for Atomic Diner in Ireland, and she also works for the Irish Playwrights and Screenwriters Guild as their webmaster, blogger and newsletter editor.

Esther Sherman: Esther is a medical underwriter, burlesque performer, voracious reader, computer games addict and geek culture fan. She is co-editor of "Nasty Snips 2", a horror anthology from Pendragon Press due in Autumn 2012.

Damien G Walter: Damien is a writer of weird and speculative fiction. In 2005 he was shortlisted for the Douglas Coupland short fiction contest, and more recently won a grant from Arts Council England to work on his first novel. He writes and reviews for The Guardian and IO9 among others.

The jury will deliberate on a shortlist of four nominations as determined by the members of the BFS. The jury shall also have powers to add nominations where it identifies an egregious omission.

The British Fantasy Awards 2012 will be presented during FantasyCon, to be held in Brighton in September.

That's a good and varied list. Will be very interesting to see the results of their deliberations.

I agree with Neil - looks like a really good jury.

We've had juries deciding all the awards before, back in the seventies, but I think it only lasted one year.

We did, and it did (according to *my* memory)

OK, so I started filling out the awards form again a while back & I saved it, just to check it worked OK now. It did.
Now I'm thinking I should get around to finishing it, before time runs out, but I can't find the link anywhere to where I should log in & recover my started form.
In fact, at this stage it's pretty hard to find the form at all. You have to click on "awards" in the "Home" menu (as opposed to the "The BFS" menu, where the link to the rules is) & scroll down some way past reports of everyone else's awards, until you find it.
I know you can get to the link on this forum thread, but shouldn't it be a bit more obvious on the website?

Anyway, I still can't find where to enter my details to recover the started form!

You're right, David, it should be more prominent at this point in time. The problem is that, as I post news to the site, older news slips off the "recent news" list. It is still there - but it's not that easy to find unless you know where to look for it (click to read "All BFS news" and you should find it there).

What I'll do later today is to put a reminder news piece about the Awards up there - so that it's right at (or near, if I manage to post some other news) the top again.

As for how to recover your form which you'd already started, I'm afraid I don't know. It might be best to email Del about that - webmaster@britishfantasysociety.org. He should be able to help if there's a problem with the technical side of things like this.

David, when you saved the form to complete later, didn't you receive an email that included the necessary link? I did, but I think each link is specific for the user, so you couldn't use mine.

I agree, the BFS website should include the nominating instructions in the correct drop down menu to make it easier to use.

I seem to remember you're right about the email Peter. I just have to find it. I tend to keep all my email, except for spam, so it's buried way back somewhere. LOL

I think what is needed is an "BFS Awards Nominations open. Click here to vote!" button, or some such somewhere on the home page, which could be removed when no longer relevant. Otherwise it's going to get buried every few days, no matter how often you post reminders.

Done my voting - after a hiccup or two.

It would be interesting if figures could be produced some time to compare how the number of recs cast this year compare to previous ones. I don't know whether it's just my imagination but there doesn't seem to be the same degree of excitement over it.

All good points - the voting button or something in the drop-down menu. I've emailed Del to ask him about this as I don't have that kind of access (or knowledge) to set something up.

David - I guess they'll be counting up the number of people who've voted once the deadline has passed. I don't know about "excitement" - perhaps there simply aren't many people on the forum nowadays who are discussing this?

All of which reminds me, I'd better get my votes in too ...

I see what you all mean. I have put a really annoying pop-up window when anyone hits the site to remind them to vote. It also has a link to the constitution and voting form.

If anyone needs a reminder of their unfinished form then drop me an email and I will se what I can do.

Cheers,

Del.

Just in case anyone needs any encouragement to vote: if the current rules had been in place in 2010, it would have taken just *three* recommendations to get onto the best novel shortlist. The most *any* novel got was six recommendations.

Not because voting levels were particularly low, but because we're interested in such a wide range of fantasy that our votes get spread out over a lot of books - 104 different novels, that year.

Even a single rec could tip the balance. So do vote. And if your partner followed you to FantasyCon, make sure they vote too!
