Will a list of nominations be published prior to FantasyCon or is that it now till the winners are announced?

Yes, it would be good to see all recommendations (amended for titles added by the judges) -- see what books I missed, what I need to catch up on. And then the shortlist should be posted well before Fantasycon.

I assume that a list will be published - but I'll alert Sarah to this thread as she'll be able to tell you for sure.  Wink

I'd guess it'll be a while till we see the shortlist - logically, the juries will have to read the items shortlisted by BFS members to know whether anything else they've liked constitutes an egregious omission.

Publishing a full list of recommendations might mean checking they were all eligible - that would be an *awful* lot of work compared to just checking the top four in each category. I suppose a disclaimer to say the list hadn't been checked might help, but I could still see it causing problems.

Does anyone know if the other four juries been appointed yet?

Hello everyone Smiley

The shortlists determined by the members for the main jury categories are now with the jury.

The recommendations for the Karl Edward Wagner award (with citations) went to the BFS Committee today.

We also have a volunteer panel for the Sydney J Bounds Best Newcomer award and details will be announced shortly.

Once the jury has concluded their initial deliberations the shortlists for all categories will be announced. (Apart from the KEW and best newcomer)

The recommendations from the members in the jury and non jury categories will also be published.

Stephen makes  a very good point re checking eligibility for the 'long lists' - the current intention is to publish the long lists as they are with a note that eligibility has not been checked for all titles.

I will be contacting Pete Crowther shortly re arrangements for the best independent press award.

We have not yet appointed juries for best artist and best non fiction but this will happen once the shortlists are announced.

Please do let me know if you have any questions, comments or suggestions - all very much appreciated and - as well as the formal announcements - I'll hopefully be posting updates on the forum for members as we go through the process.

Sarah

Thanks for the update, Sarah - all very exciting! I love this stuff.

We have not yet appointed juries for best artist and best non fiction but this will happen once the shortlists are announced.

Oh, yes, those ones that are supposed to include peers of the nominees must be tricky, because if they're on the jury that shows they aren't on the shortlist!

But if they aren't appointed till after the shortlist is announced, doesn't that mean they will miss out on the opportunity to add egregious omissions to the shortlist?

Yes - mea culpa and thank you, Stephen.

The juries will be in place before the shortlists are announced.
