Although my reviews have appeared in Prism, the BFS Journal, Black Static and Interzone, I've never had fiction published anywhere except my own magazine. I've never even submitted my stories or novels anywhere, except to things like school magazines a long time ago.

So I've decided to have a go at writing some stories that other people might think are worth publishing. I don't expect there will be any fiction-related successes to announce here for a long, long time to come, but nice to mark the starting place... day zero!

It's been exciting to see things like Duotrope from the other side - very handy how you can watch deadlines and things on there.

I've been brainstorming lots of story ideas for each anthology and pitching them to Ranjna... so far I've managed a lot of scrunched-up faces and one tipped head with a hmm, so I'll keep trying.

Two reviews by me in the new bookshelf-friendly Interzone 242: The Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland and Led the Revels There by Catherynne M. Valente, and Seven Wonders by Adam Christopher. And my reviews will almost certainly be the least interesting items in what looks like a fab issue, including a new story by Lavie Tidhar.

I guess my appearances in Black Static and Interzone make this my first FantasyCon as a properly published writer...

Interzone 243, out now on Kindle, features my review of The Wurms of Blearmouth by Steven Erikson (and lots of other interesting stuff).

The fiction side of my writing hasn't gone as well so far. I've written a couple of things in response to submission guidelines, but nothing good enough to submit. Will keep trying.

I'm a fine one to talk as I can't write fiction, but keep at the fiction writing - it can only get better with practice (or so they tell me).

For the next issue of Interzone I've interviewed Karin Tidbeck, and reviewed her super new collection Jagannath.

Tried again on the fiction, this time something intended for Rhys's issue of Sein und Werden, but it didn't really do it for me and I didn't submit it. At least it gave me a better sense of what I want to achieve in a short story.

I think this year I'll take a lead from something Karin mentions in the interview. Her Clarion classmates have an annual challenge for who can accumulate the most rejections, and she says it's worked brilliantly for them...
