Warhammer 40k: Butcher’s Nails by Aaron Dembski-Bowden. Audiodrama review

BUTCHER’S NAILS: Horus Heresy Audio Drama, Aaron Dembski-Bowden, The Black Library, CD, £10

Reviewed By Steve Dean

The primarch Angron, it must be said, is something of a nut job. He has driven spikes, the titular nails, into his brain, apparently to make violence more pleasurable. Not content with taking a hammer to his own head, he has ordered all of his chapter to do the same.

This being part of the Horus Heresy (or Bore us Endlessly) saga, chief nutter and all his little nutters are sent out into the galaxy by Horus to kill stuff. Unfortunately, the meddling Eldar have decided this is a bad thing, as Angron is prophesied to become a huge and powerful demon of Chaos somewhere down the line. The Eldar begin a series of raids on Angron to try and prevent this.

What follows is a series of battles, described in graphic, bloodthirsty detail, as both sides clash and are slaughtered in various ways. And that’s about it, inappropriate violence with very little story line and certainly no consequences for anyone, except the dead.

Apart from the whopping £10 price tag, the slight content and mindless violence is enough to condemn this one to the recycling bin. I’m not normally one for censorship of any kind, but this  material should come with a warning. If this was a computer game or a film, it would be at least a 15, if not more.
