Cemetery Dance magazine reopening to submissions later this yearComments Off Cemetery Dance magazine will open to submissions again later this year (please don’t send anything now – it’ll still be returned unread). However, they are only going to open to submissions for two months at the very most. Prior to closing to submissions, they state that they were receiving up to 500 stories per month, with a limited number of fiction slots available per issue, hence the change. In addition, they will have a new electronic submission system in place, allowing quicker response, saving on the cost of postage and being more environmentally-friendly. They will be seeking: “Horror, dark mystery, and suspense short stories up to 5,000 words. Originals, no reprints. We want tales that are powerful and emotional—creepy, chilling, disturbing, and moody. Suspense/mystery/crime tales with a horror element are always welcome. Both supernatural and psychological stories are fine. Most common reasons for rejection are: lack of power, lack of originality, slow pacing, poor writing, boring themes. Read the magazine, see what type of fiction we are publishing—don’t submit with a blind eye!” Payment will be: “Professional rates, minimum of five cents per word, plus two contributor copies. Payable within 30 days of publication. Up to 5,000 words; maximum payment of $250. All rights revert to the author upon publication.” Full details on how to submit will be posted on the website once the new submission system is ready. The publishers stress that writers must not submit until the appropriate time – all manuscripts submitted before they have the new system ready will be returned unread. |

The new improved Black Static magazineComments Off There was no Black Static published in June 2012. Issue 29 will instead become the July-August issue and mail out at the same time as Interzone issue 241. The magazines will continue on that schedule, sharing the same dateline and mailings. This makes much more sense after the recent Royal Mail changes. They are both due out this week. TTA Press have taken this opportunity to make a couple of design changes too. Black Static magazine will lose 36mm off its height and 30mm off its width, which will allow printing of more pages (issue 29 will be 96 pages instead of the usual 64). There is the very real prospect of increasing to 128 pages in the future. The new size will use a thicker uncoated paper and a thicker cover, which will be laminated. So it’ll have a spine. The point size of the fiction will be slightly bigger. This will all add up to a better reading and handling experience, and a format that better suits the content. |

New horror magazine seeks Kickstarter fundingComments Off John Joseph Adams is seeking Kickstarter funding for the proposed Nightmare Magazine - “a monthly magazine of horror and dark fantasy short fiction which will be published both online and in ebook format. This Kickstarter is intended to help fund the first issue and to get the magazine off the ground. In Nightmare‘s pages, you will find all kinds of horror fiction, from zombie stories and haunted house tales, to visceral psychological horror. No subject is off-limits, and we will be encouraging our writers to take chances with their fiction and push the envelope. Edited by bestselling anthologist John Joseph Adams, every month Nightmare will bring you a mix of originals and reprints, and feature a variety of authors—from the bestsellers and award-winners you already know to the best new voices you haven’t heard of yet. When you read Nightmare, it is our hope that you’ll see where horror comes from, where it is now, and where it’s going. Nightmare will also include non-fiction, fiction podcasts, and Q&As with our authors that go behind-the-scenes of their stories.” There are new brand stories lined up for the first issue from Laird Barron, Sarah Langan, Jonathan Maberry and Genevieve Valentine.
